Born in New Brunswick and raised in Ontario, Matthew James Matheson rose quickly through the culinary ranks. He completed chef training and culinary management at Humber College in 2003 and from there took a job at Le Select Bistro. In three short years Matheson made it to junior sous chef, leaving in 2007 to helm La Palette in Kensington Market. Both Le Select and La Palette’s proper French training and Matheson’s own rogue Canadiana cooking skills were found in the unique culinary experience that was Oddfellows.
In spring 2010 he continued the dynamic relationship with the Oddfellows founders at their new venture, Parts and Labour, in Toronto’s Parkdale neighbourhood. Matthew Matheson, at the age of 28, currently serves as executive chef at Parts and Labour where he daily satiates the appetites of hungry diners. It was in 2011 that Chef Matheson co-founded Toronto’s wildly successful Group of 7 Chefs, where thematic monthly dinners are put on at various Toronto venues, restaurants and unique locations.
In 2012, and after much success at Parts and Labour, Chef Matheson alongside a newly appointed events team, brought the philosophy of Parts as a restaurant and started P&L Catering. Thus being able to bring Parts and Labour to our 3 downtown venues as well as offsite. Finally, in this coming year, Chef Matheson is embarking on his new venture Northern Alliance, where Chefs from the US and Canada will come together to host fundraising dinners for food and supplier charitable organizations.
Parts & Labour
Established in 2010 to major acclaim as the new cultural hub of Parkdale, this design infused space boasts an haute cuisine restaurant/bar, a live-music venue on the lower level, and is available for private events. Brought to you by the young entrepreneurs behind The Social, Oddfellows and Castor, P & L offers flexibility for event styles due to its multi-faceted and open space. It’s internal design elements including exposed brick walls, Castor designed wood burning fireplace, multi-coloured bar lighting made out of repurposed fire extinguishers, and bar with corkscrew stools will only add a modern panache to any event.
